Here’s a good deal from Amazon – you’ll get a good discount for buying in bulk, it’s cheaper than you’ll find the same package (if you can find it) in the high street shops and the postage is free as well.

The Maxtra cartidges tend to last about 4 weeks (depending on your usage of course) – so this pack will keep you going for a full year.

Brita Jug Filter + Cartridges + Water Bottle

August 4th, 2009

Every year over 200 billion bottles of water are sold. According to current estimates less than 25% of the empty bottles are recycled. It’s an environmental disaster. If all those empty bottles were laid out end to end they would cover enough distance to get to the moon and back – 56 times!

What’s more, in blind taste tests most people can’t tell the difference between common or garden tap water and bottled water.

And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, some bottled water has been found to contain chemicals which “leech” out of the plastic (PET) bottles.

Anyway – Brita’s anniversary pack has everything you need to get great tasting healthy water at home or on the go.

Here’s what you get:

  • Marella Cool Blue water filter jug
  • 1 Sports Bottle
  • 3 free Cartridges

How Come I Sometimes Get Black Particles In My Water?

No need to panic. These are just small fragments of carbon which have escaped from the filter. They can be caused by rubbing of the carbon particles during transport and general handling. It’s quite normal.

That’s why Brita recommend that the first two fillings shouldn’t be used – although, if you did use them it still wouldn’t be a major problem. The contents of the Brita cartridges are food grade quality and will do you no harm whatsoever – the taste might not be as pleasant as you’d wish for, that’s all.

Soak the cartridge thoroughly when you first use it and shake it whilst immersed under water. That’ll encourage any loose carbon particles to be released and will help to avoid any further carbon particles being released during the useful lifetime of your cartridge.

Brita filter jugs are great. They make ordinary tap water tast so much beter and get rid of any potentially harmful contaminants. It’s a lot easier than lugging bottles of water back from the supermarket and – as long as you’ve got an active filter and access to a tap – you’ll never run out of fresh water.

The only minor problem is that the replacement filters can be a little pricey. Cheaper than buying bottled water for sure, but the prices seem to vary enormously from one shop to the next.

It really is worth shopping around, but it can be a pain going from one shop to another. One consistently cheap source that I have found is Amazon. You can buy them online and have them delivered direct to your door. Shipping on qualifying orders is free – all you need to do is spend more than £5. It does take a couple of days longer (but don’t forget it’s free). Still, if you’re in a hurry you can opt for standard, or even express, delivery.
